Gender Bender is an international festival conceived in an effort to introduce the Italian audiences to the new imageries produced by contemporary culture and relating to the representation of the body and to gender identity and sexual orientation issues. Now in its third edition, Gender Bender offers a free and curious perspective on the newest cultural productions, shining a spotlight on those events in which gender identity and orientations swift and overlay, crating new and stimulating imagery. The Festival endeavours to create meaningful bridges between cultural phenomena that seem to be distant and contradictory, presenting side to side literature and cinema, visual arts and theatre, and showing works by directors, visual artists, writers - but also oeuvres taken from the music industry and entertainment - in order to demonstrate how it is possible to transcend the norms and the stereotypes related to masculine and feminine and anticipate those perceptual shifts and metamorphosis that will become an integral part of our cultural imagery. Gender Bender is produced by Il Cassero, the Gay and Lesbian Center in Bologna, Italy, that for over twenty years has been realizing gender and sexual orientation related projects, Gender Bender is the first project to fully integrate all the artistic and scientific institutions housed within Bologna’s Manifattura delle Arti, the new cultural center built in what used to be the ancient city port. These institutions are Cassero, the Cineteca, Cinema Lumiére, the Department of Musica and Drama of Bologna University, the Galleria d’Arte Moderna.
