The discovery of ones own sexuality, the conflict between dreams and the violence of the external world, the relationship between desire and taboo are the central themes of the young American filmmaker, artist and musician Sadie Benning’s work (Le Tigre, a post punk band formed by Sadie, supports the Riot Grrrls movement). The retrospective presented at the MAMbo gallery in Bologna by Gender Bender and Soggettiva, in collaboration with the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo di Torino, is dedicated to her videos.
Her works make up a kind of diary between private and public life, and tell of the difficult experience of growing up as an out lesbian, in a hostile and repressive society.
